If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know that Skycig or BLU Cigs was one of the first e-cigarettes I ever used, and were also the first e-cigarettes I’d successfully given up smoking with. The first time I quit, I used Skycigs (now known as BLU Cigs) for around six months and then managed to kick the habit completely – real cigarettes and electronic cigarettes, for two whole years before I started smoking again like an idiot.
After recently trying them again under the new name, it was definitely time for a BLU Cigs review. Let’s take a look at what I thought…
BLU Cigs Blu Classic Tobacco E-Cigarette Starter Kit
The starter kit gives you everything you’ll need to get a good taste for whether or not electronic cigarettes are for you, and when you consider that some of the starter kits out there can retail for over £20, you really are getting yourself a bargain.
That’s the first point I want to make in the BLU Cigs review – they are great value for money!
You have two different varieties of the starter kit to choose from – Classic Tobacco or Menthol, although there are other cartridge flavours available. Plus if you like what you try, you could always upgrade later to the BLU Cigs Pro Kit which gives you the option of picking whichever flavoured e-liquid you like to refill the tanks.
Inside the kit you get TWO batteries, TWO cartridge refills, the USB charger and a cute little hard plastic case that is no bigger than the average cigarette pack. When you consider that most e-cig starter kits for under £10 would normally only give you just the one battery, you’re actually getting yourself a really good deal.
The BLU Cigs battery is a small battery – nowhere near as big as what the tank-style e-cigarettes can offer you, like the BLU Cigs Pro Kit. Instead of the 650 – 1300mAh batteries that you can get with these bigger styles, the smaller ones only tend to be around 180mAh – 300mAh capacities, and although it doesn’t state what size you are getting in your kit, I would estimate somewhere in this range.
It’s made well and looks good – sleek, black and shiny, it has a blue tip so people won’t think you’re actually smoking a real cigarette in public. I actually quite liked it although I’ll be honest, aside from to make a refreshing change every once in a while, or for when you want something smaller and more discreet than the bigger e-cigs you possess, once you’ve made the change to tank-style e-cigs, this little BLU Cigs beauty won’t be enough for you.
If you’re brand new to the world of e-cigarettes, however, this little BLU Cigs e-cigarette starter kit might just be the one thing that changes your life. With the cartridge, it’s about the same size as a regular cigarette, only weighs a touch more, and although smoking e-cigarettes will take some getting used to, it doesn’t take long to get the hang of it when you make the change from the regular cigs.
You’ll probably get a couple of hours use from this with “regular” puffing. If this is your first e-cigarette, you’ll probably find that you go through the batteries a bit quicker than that – an hour to an hour and a half. This is just where you are getting used to being without your regular cigarettes – you’ll be amazed at how quickly you will adjust.
They are available in three different strengths – Mild (6mg), Regular (12mg), and Bold (18mg). If this is your first experience with e-cigarettes, I’d suggest that you start with your highest and work your way down. If you get the 12mg cartridges to go ‘midway’ (because you’re not quite sure which one you’ll need), they won’t be strong enough and that will put you off before you’ve even had a decent e-cigarette experience.
You can also get the cartridges in a variety of flavours:
- Classic Tobacco
- Rich Tobacco
- Tobacco Gold
You can also get yourself a couple of flavour sampler packs for £5.99 for three cartridges. The Tobacco Variety will give you Classic Tobacco, Tobacco Gold, and Rich Tobacco. The Sweet Variety gives you Menthol, Cherry, and Vanilla.
The flavours themselves aren’t bad and almost lasted for the entire duration of the cartridge. I would have preferred a bit more ‘ooomph’ to the flavour if I’m honest, but on the whole, they really weren’t that bad at all and I would recommend them to new users of e-cigarettes.
Each cartridge is said to last for 20 cigarettes each which would suggest that they should last you for one day if you are an ‘average’ twenty-a-day smoker. I didn’t find that they would last me quite that long. I was getting through about a cartridge and a half every day, sometimes two cartridges. I’d say each cartridge would probably last you for around 10-15 cigarettes rather than 20.
I’m a big fan of refilling my own cartridges and you will save a whole bunch of money when you use them this way. It does generally tend to void your warranty but buying a new battery or pack of cartridges is probably quicker and easier than going through the returns process should anything break anyway.
You can buy BLU Cigs e-liquid at £3.99 for 10ml (regularly £4.99) and you can get them in Classic Tobacco, Menthol, Cherry, NRG, Tobacco Gold, Vanilla and Rich Tobacco plus Strawberry/Mint, and Blueberry. The only thing I will say negatively about these (because the flavours weren’t bad at all) is that they were occasionally too thick (I think) for certain e-cig tanks like the Vapouriz Fuse and the Kangertech EVOD. When I was using the BLU Cigs liquid in them, the coils seem to conk out on me quite quickly, covered with a think gunky coating of e-liquid that I found impossible to get rid of.
Throat Hit & Vapour
These are only small batteries so you can’t expect to get the same kind of vapour out of these as you would something much bigger like the Jac Vapour Series-E. Despite their small size though, they do pack a powerful punch and gives you just the right amount of exhale vapour to keep you satisfied.
The throat hit wasn’t bad either, in fact, I was quite impressed. I was definitely more swayed towards the higher strength cartridges (18mg) than the lesser ones, and I didn’t find the 12mg Mild strength to be quite enough for me.
All in all, I found the experience to be quite a pleasant one and considering this is only a small classic two-piece designed e-cigarette, it is a pretty powerful one that will keep you going when you are desperately craving a cigarette!
With ElectricTobacconist, you will get free delivery if you spend over £9 which is by far one of the cheapest free delivery options I’ve ever seen! When you consider that this kid is currently £9.99, you won’t pay a single penny more!
If you place your order before 4 pm, they’ll even ship it the same day!
Are BLU Cigs The Best E-Cigarettes?
I did really like BLU Cigs both recently and when they were previously known as Skycigs, and if you are brand new to the world of e-cigarette smoking, I would definitely recommend these are your first one. It’s not one you will stick with for long as, after a while, you will want to upgrade to something with a bit more power, but to get things kick-started and to learn the ropes, this is a great one to choose!
Great for beginner’s or someone testing the waters – I’d definitely give them 4 stars out of 5!
