Vaper Empire Rhubarb & Custard Eliquid Review [Artisan Collection]

[AD – Gifted by Vaper Empire] You may recall that I tried a really nice Australia tobacco eliquid recently. Well, today, I would like to review the second flavour that I got in my little goodie bag from the Australian vape company — Vaper Empire Rhubarb and Custard eliquid. And if you know me, you’ll know that I absolutely love rhubarb.

Unfortunately, I’m not the biggest fan of custard-flavoured eliquids. I’ve come across some that have smelled like cheese, others that have tasted like feet, and a few that have been good enough for me to vape on a repeat basis. I haven’t really found a rhubarb-based flavour that’s kicked it out of the ballpark yet, and definitely not a rhubarb and custard one. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this one is it!

Vaper Empire Eliquid Review Rhubarb & Custard

Let’s jump in and fight out …

I discussed the company a lot more (especially the price) in my first review  Virginia Gold — but just to recap, here are the things you need to know:

Empire Vaper is an Australian company.

Eliquid is made in and distributed from the UK.

Two collections — Artisan and Classic, both available in 10ml or 30ml bottles.

I think all eliquids are what I would class as MTL eliquids — 50/50 VG/PG. I can’t see that information on the website for the Classic Collection, though. It doesn’t state the VG/PG ratio on the bottle, but you can find the details for the Artisan Collection under ‘Product Specifications’ on the Vaper Empire site.

Vaper Empire doesn’t just manufacture and sell vape eliquids, they also have an array of devices on offer, ranging from the V-Pack II (cigalike) to the Vibe (their first mod device). Just like the eliquids, it appears that all of the devices are what I would consider to be mouth-to-lung devices and not big-cloud, sub-ohm devices. The cigalikes are obviously not going to give you massive clouds, and the Vibe mod device comes with a 1.5-ohm coil, which I would usually use with 50/50 VG/PG eliquid and vape the two-step, mouth-to-lung way.

I didn’t talk about the “aesthetics” in my last review, and it’s really not that important anyway, but I really like the branding of these eliquids and the company as a whole. The website is smart, classic-looking, and easy to use, and I really like the bottles/labels of the Artisan Collection. They look good and they’re easy to read. The only thing I didn’t like was the missing VG/PG ratio.

Again, I know the aesthetics aren’t important but I just think the brand looks super classy. There are a lot of punky, bright, and obnoxious-looking brands out there, so it’s nice to see something simple and smart.

Anyway, I just thought I’d mention it. I like it.

I got my hands on a 10ml bottle of 6mg Rhubard & Custard eliquid, and this very moment, it’s on sale for just $7.49 (AU) instead of $14.95. (They have a couple of different eliquids on sale each month – “Flavours of the Month”.) I also went with the same tank I used for the last Vaper Empire review — Kangertech Nano Topbox, and I managed to find the actual Kanger box this time. I’ve set the box to 15 watts, with a 1.5-ohm coil in the tank, and I’m about to puff away …

Rhubarb & Custard Eliquid Review Vaper Empire

Ooooh, there’s a really good, fruity smell coming from the bottle when you take the top off. It smells like it might be packed with flavour — tarty, sweet rhubarb flavour — and my mouth salivated at the thought of it. I hoped there would be more rhubarb than custard in this one because juices like this tend to be the other way around. Thankfully, it smells more rhubarb than custard. Hopes are high, peeps!

Oh, and if you’re going to put more custard in than rhubarb, the name should be “Custard & Rhubarb”, thank you very much.

“You’ll be doing yourself a favour by indulging in this time-honoured comfort dessert flavour. Rhubarb & Custard is a yesteryear favourite that will cast you back to simpler times with its sharp, zesty rhubarb zing on a pillow of creamy vanilla custard. It’s what playtime tastes like!”

Will it really, though?

Vaper Empire Rhubarb and Custard Eliquid Review

Rhubarb and custard (or just rhubarb anything) really is a yesteryear favourite for me, and it actually does cast me back to simpler times. My lovely Nan always had a little patch of rhubarb growing in the far corner of her garden and every year we’d be treated to a veritable feast of rhubarb desserts. We’d have it with custard, with crumble, with custard and crumble, in pies, in strudels, with ice cream, with other fruits and berries, with everything and anything you could think to put the stuff with. It became a ‘thing’. We are the rhubarb family.

Well, we were.

My lovely Nan passed away suddenly, a few months back, and now *everything* rhubarb’y just reminds me of her. The mere smell of rhubarb makes me cry a bit because the, folks. The grief is also weird. It’s not just the smell/taste of rhubarb that brings a tear to my eyes, the song “A Deeper Shade of Blue” by Steps now makes me cry. As does TakeaBreak magazine.

Cheers, Nan.

And yes, that was sarcasm.

Anyway, give me a moment to clear the lump from my throat. Ahem.

Vaper Empire Rhubarb & Custard Eliquid Review

Rhubarb & Custard absolutely tastes like rhubarb. Juicy, tart, sweet, and all in exactly the right amounts. Not only is the general rhubarb flavour spot on (and it’s quite a weird flavour to get right), you can also taste the tanginess of it. The inhale was packed with the zingy flavour, with just a slight sweetness coming through on the exhale and, for once, I think the name might just be the right way around — it is a rhubarb flavoured eliquid with a hint of custard at the end. You can tell it’s custard, but there’s not loads of it. It just licks around the very edges of the flavour, adding a little something to make the tart rhubarb creamier and sweeter.

Perfectly done, if you ask me. It’s very true-to-taste. Rhubarb & Custard hasn’t been overdone and there’s not too much of any one flavour, and it’s not synthetic tasting, either. Lovely-jubbly.

I found this one just a tad harsher on the throat than the other 6mg eliquid I tried (Virginia Gold), but it’s still a pretty smooth eliquid. The tanginess is what makes it slightly scratchier but it’s not unpleasant. Not by any means. It gives the eliquid a more wholesome, satisfying hit and made it easier to vape with long-term. I polished off this bottle in a couple of days, without wanting to change the flavour, just like I did with Virginia Gold.

Vapour-wise, again, I had no complaints. I got what I expected to get from a 6mg 50/50 VG/PG eliquid.

I’m really impressed with the two flavours I received from the Vaper Empire Artisan Collection. They both tasted great, were easy and smooth to vape, and flavoursome enough for me to wish I’d found a UK stockist. I mentioned this in my previous review and still haven’t found anywhere. Sad face.

Rhubarb and custard eliquid is a tough one to get right (in my opinion). The rhubarb’s tangy-sweetness is hard to recreate, and custard is VERY easy to get so very, very wrong. Vaper Empire got it spot on, though. This is definitely one I’d remember if a conversation about custard or rhubarb-based flavours came up.

If I found a UK stockist, absolutely, I’d buy both of these flavours again. It takes a lot for me to want to switch from tobacco MTL eliquids to a fruity one, and then stick to it until the bottle runs out, but this Rhubarb & Custard treat has really ticked a lot of boxes for me. I can’t think of a single thing I’d want to do differently or change. Can you believe it?!

Yes! It’s a great flavour, and it’s really very rhubarb’y. If you don’t like rhubarb, you’re not going to like this. On the other hand, if you do, you’ll find this one offers up a very authentic taste that I’m pretty sure you’ll get on board with. It does taste like rhubarb, there’s more rhubarb than custard, and it’s not too sweet. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

If you’ve tried any of the Vaper Empire eliquids or collections, please feel free to leave your comments and thoughts in the space below this review. I’d love to know what you thought and whether or not you’d buy them again.
